The Margrette/Powell family have lived and worked on the land of Red House Farm for five generations. Having first come to the farm in 1915 as tenants of the church, the family worked tirelessly to grow livestock and arable ventures, eventually being able to purchase the farm in their own right.
The history of the farm, however, goes back much further. Situated in Elmstone Hardwicke, one of the last villages to enclose common fields, the land still shows remnants of the past; with one of our fields boasting an impressive example of a medieval ridge-and-furrow format. You can also see the remains of buildings around the farm, some of which have been estimated to date back to at least the 1500s.
Ruth and Jon took over the farm in 2005 and have raised 3 daughters here. Throughout their residency, they have stived to bring the farm and business into the modern age, although we do still use a seventy year old tractor! Starting their own flock of Jacob sheep, and a herd of rare-breed Gloucester cattle, they have made the place their own.
In 2013 they decided it was about time our little share of paradise was shared with the world. For almost a decade we operated the campsite for 28 days during the summer season, with a small (but very well maintained) toilet/shower block. In 2021 the site received planning permission for a longer open season, an increase to 50 pitches, and a fantastic new amenities block.
That just about brings you up to speed! But don’t worry, the stories not over yet. The family plan to continue to grow and diversify the farm and business, making sure that Elmwicke can stay the brilliant place it is.
